I'm a family guy who is addicted to swim/bike/run and anything to do with getting out into the backcountry wilderness areas. This blog focuses on the swim, bike, run and other various aspects of my attempts to finish in the top ten percent of my age group in whatever race I do. It used to be all about finishing the legs of an Olympic Distance triathlon: swim in 20 minutes, bike in 60 minutes, and run in 40 minutes. Now, it's more about training well and finishing well.

Race Report: Tour of Sufferlandria
“According to Grunter von Agony, race director, “The course is carefully balanced between agony, misery and despair. So, yes, the Tour of Sufferlandria is a worthwhile target for anybody looking for an early season goal. You really ought to have some solid training behind you before you start it, and you’ll surely go through a roasting in hell during the race. When you come out the other side? With a solid 9 days of effort behind you, you will be able to take an ox, tie him to your bike, drag him up and over Mt. Sufferlandria while he tries to run the other way, and drink a flagon of ale made from the bikes of all those you crushed on your way to a glorious victory. Or the Minions will eat you for lunch. But, whatever.”
To Participate:
To join the ToS, you must simply commit to following the schedule above and ride yourself into the ground each day. Join the community on our Facebook page for inspiration in those dark moments between stages to hear stories of HONOR GLORY AND VICTORY. Those who complete and register their 9 days with our partner, TrainerRoad.com, will be be eligible for daily prizes and thrown into a pool of prizes from the ‘fest, TrainerRoad and others at the end of the event.

Tour of Sufferlandria Day 8 done
Tour of Sufferlandia: thinking about day 8
** Day 8 – There is No Try + Revolver – 1hr 45 minutes ***
Revolver. Those who have done it, know what this day brings. Even by itself, it’s one of the most feared videos in the ‘fest collection. To have it this far into the tour, and following the increasing speed intervals of There is No Try is simply diabolical. Which means it’s a perfect fit for the pentultimate day of The Tour. The day starts out with TINT, which asks you to incrementally increase your speed as each interval progresses (these are known as Sufferlandrian Intervals), with several of the intervals finishing in sprints, you’re asked to put out some maximum power early in the day. The longest interval, which is 4×2:00, comes in the middle of the session and can crack even the strongest resolve. We hear that both Wiggins, Jens Voigt and Peter Sagen are all targeting this day, so watch for them.
Focus on making it to the 5:00 recovery section between intervals. While there, you’ll probably feel quite full of fear that you can’t do the second set of intervals, but we’ve found that if you can get past the 1:30 interval in the second set, then you can finish it off. So just think of getting past that and then you’ll be fine. Sort of.

Today's "Vision Quest" race the train training moment
Anyway, one clip that I can't find on YouTube has Swain riding bike really hard in the early morning with a train next to the road, and he's training so hard he's keeping pace with the train. AWESOME, right!?!?
In typical fashion...."so, there I was" during this afternoon's bike ride, cruising down the little hill that takes me parrellel to the railroad tracks. A train blows its whistle and scares the crap out of me, and then blows it again and again because it's passing a cross with the road. I look over as the road become parrellel with the train, and the engine is even with me. GAME ON, BABY!!! I beat the hell out of those pedals for about thirty seconds while I lived in the moment, the moment of the "Vision Quest" bike vs train training scene. Then I rounded another turn in the road and a strong wind smacked me in the face, and I burned out in typical old-man-reliving-his-youth fashion.
BUT THAT 30 SECONDS WAS AWESOME!

Run Progress Test = SUCCESS!
One of my main goals this year was to run consistently at a moderate pace to bring down my run time. I haven’t been 100% consistent, but I’ve hit many of the workouts. My weight is still kind of high, but it seems like I’ve plateaued and the weight will start coming off (we’ll see!).
Anyway….yesterday was a Physical Fitness Test at drill. It’s a standard three-mile course that we’ve been running once every month. This month, I wasn’t expecting to run it really hard, but when we started, I felt good and decided to go with it. There were a couple other Marines running about 20 yards ahead for the first half, and I was just trying to stick with them to see how long they would hold the pace. I didn’t know how fast we were running, but we hit the half-way point at 8:40. Wow! At first, I started thinking that we were slow, running an 8:40 mile, but then I remembered it was 1.5 miles at that point, and I started thinking “Hey, maybe I can hit the holy grail of 18:00 and max this thing!” Going into the turn-around, I had surged a bit, and then kept up that surge right after the turn and passed the two other Marines. I held the pace, and put forth a 105% effort to come in at 17:40, holding off a last-100-yard surge from another Marine.
This is a life-time Personal Record. I never ran this fast even in my college days. So, my strategy for run training is working. Yeehaw!
Now I just need to confirm if the bike training is working. The indoor test a couple weeks ago was nice, but I’m not confident it gives me the whole picture. It might be a while yet til I get a nice afternoon with enough time to do my 40k route. I’m excited about it, but I think I’m going to be a couple minutes shy of the goal. I wanted to double my bike volume from last year, and I’m only about 60% higher than last year; my average run volume has fully doubled, and that successful progress is evident.

Sufferfest “Local Hero” review
http://www.thesufferfest.com/

Bottom Line: Buy it and do it. It hurts when done correctly, and it hurts in a way that should help you improve your 40k TT for triathlons. The pain is fairly consistent throughout the 75 minutes of actual work (plus five minutes warm up and five minutes cool-down). Also, I think the creator should get a “smart ass of the year award” for his continuing story and character development. You’ll find the story line of Local Hero quite interesting and down-right fun(!).
The way I look at it, the workout consists of three main sections: the pyramid, the 3-minute laps, and the sprints.
The pyramids are my favorite because I can understand on a molecular level (if that is even possible) how it is improving my functional threshold. Make no mistake, it hurts! But then if it didn’t hurt, it wouldn’t be the Sufferfest now, would it? My only advice is to take a few tries to set your expected levels of effort appropriately for these pyramids so that it takes max effort to complete them but not so hard that you can’t keep going.
The 3-minute laps are good, too. I like this because it hits a type of effort level that I haven’t been doing but know I need to do. Three minutes at a level above TT-race-pace is needed to push you to that next level, and I just haven’t been doing it. This video now gets me doing it. Again, set an appropriate level so you can actually finish. I wish the breaks were only one minute long because two minutes feels too long, but then I have never been able to actually rest long enough between sets like you’re supposed to to make the next set absolutely as hard as it could be.
The sprints are….well, they are what they are (ha ha!). You get out of them what you put into them. What other clichés can I come up with? Not my favorite thing to do, but when I am mentally prepared, I can crush this section and feel good about it. Somehow, the video gets me to really put out on these even though I don’t like them.
The soundtrack throughout the video is good. There isn’t any Iron Maiden or Judas Priest or AC/DC on it, so it’s not my normal style, but it keeps me interested, for sure. Personally, I wish there wasn’t a political or social message in the “Let’s Go Shopping” song because it kind of ruins the mood, but oh well…I quickly get over it once it’s done.
The Sufferfest videos keep getting better with each new release, and “Local Hero” is no different. And seriously, for $12 it’s a no-brainer to become your own local hero.
